What is sexual assault?

Any unwanted sexual activity that occurs without the other party’s consent is known as Sexual assault. It includes touching, groping, fondling, forced penetration, or any other sexual act performed without consent.

What is the difference between rape and sexual assault?

Rape is also a form of sexual assault. However, rape involves non-consensual penetration. Rape involves the genitals, anus, or mouth. Moreover, not all sexual activities involve penetration. In short, rape involves penetration; but sexual assault is any unwanted sexual activity.

What constitutes consent?

Consent is more like an agreement to engage in a specific sexual activity. It must be given by all the individuals involved in sexual activity. The consent must be free from manipulation. Consent can be withdrawn at any point in time. Also, the consent should be clear, verbal, and affirmative.

If you know someone who was sexually assaulted, the first step is to believe and validate their experience. Do not pass any comment that can be perceived as a judgment. Please respect their decision and choices throughout the process, offer them emotional support, and let them know they are not alone.
